The Environment

The Stanford environment is managed totally by volunteers only, with effect from August 2018 when the Municipality Green Team no longer contributed to the upkeep of the village.

The scope of the work is as follows:

  • Ongoing maintenance of the Wandelpad to remove invasive species and to keep the shrubs cut back to ensure the safety of walkers.
  • Assist with the reed clean up and cutting back and any potential community projects arising from this activity.
  • Working with the Whale Coast Conservation Team on the clean-up of the Willem Appel Dam and open up the areas around the De Bron School and the dam by extending the Wandelpad.

Key focus areas ahead for 2019 :

 Large scale reed cutting and re-growth prevention (selective poisoning)
 Estuary water quality and flow rates – long term strategy planned
 Alien removal with improved community education and awareness
campaigns
 Demolition of derelict school ablution facility on top school field
 Ongoing fund raising by SCT  – “Think and Drink” evenings
 Installation of camera (already funded) to manage the abuse / noise /
litter at Withers / Shaw’s house.
 Pending muni funding for a wooden board walk around Cappers wall to
Milkwood forest.
 Extend the Wandelpad team’s focus from De Bruyn St/Vlei St to the bird
hide.
 Enhanced community education and awareness communication initiatives to try and mitigate vandalism/ littering and owner dog poo removal.
